In the field of the gemstone rings the borders of different categories by function are rather blurred and it is easier to classify them by the type of stone. Precious stones are ruby sapphire and emerald , while all the rest are classified a s semi precious. Pearls, being an organic gemstone have their own grading and pricing system and is good to be kept separate. Stones with hardness less than 9 on the Moh's scale of hardness and especially ones with inherent fractures and inclusions, like the emerald, have to be worn cautiously and removed during periods of physical activities. |

| Dress ring, also known as Cocktail ring or Fashion ring , is a large oversized ring, set in most cases with precious or semiprecious stones. Dress ring have become a fashion statement, adding color to ones accessories and declaring bold thinking and confidence. Usually worn on the forth finger of the right hand, it pretty much overlaps its look and purpose with the
right hand ring. For me, the difference is in the size of the main stone. While right hand rings are generally set with multiple small stones, fashion rings have large gemstone(s) as centre piece. |

Pearl rings |
| The pearl cocktail ring has an obvious center piece - the pearl. Small diamond accents are often used to add glamour to the assembly but they should not draw to much attention. The color and luster of the pearl are of prime importance. I will recommend the use of high quality freshwater pearls rather than low quality Akoya or South sea pearl. This set up will still cut from the price and increase the aesthetic factor of the piece. If you can afford it though, nothing can replace a high luster South sea or Akoya pearl. Since large part of the pearl, set in a ring is concealed from the setting and not visible, manufacturers use blemished pearls and place them with the blemished side down. This is why the pearl set in a ring is usually cheaper than the same size and quality on a string where almost all the surface of the pearl is exposed. Being a gemstone of organic origin, pearls require special care and maintenence. |
