Engagement Rings

Diamond rings are clearly divided in two major sections: bridal diamond rings and fashion diamond rings. The engagement diamond rings are the ultimate courtship gift fulfilling specific ceremonial purposes and they share the bridal sector with the less popular diamond wedding rings. The fashion diamond rings are presented by right hand ring and the diamond dress ring. These two varieties largely overlap each other and have mostly ornamental and statement function.

The most popular engagement ring designs in South Africa
The selection of the engagement ring designs on this page is based on the number of requests for quotation I have received during the past 12 months. I assumed that more requests are indication of higher popularity and organized them in one separate category in order to help you find your trendy design faster.

*I have included some information about the styles on this page in order to give you pre-quote guidelines about the stone size and the entry level price. Main diamond (stone) size indicates the carat weight of the stone set on the ring on the picture, while the numbers in the brackets suggest the entry level diamond size and the biggest (if applicable) recommended one respectively. For example: in the first picture, model T17 is set with diamond 0.67 ct on the picture, however this design could be set with any size from 0.45ct to 1.00ct and bigger. The price is based on the entry level size in quality J-SI1 certified diamond and it is inclusive of VAT. For example: model T17 set with 0.45ct J-SI1 certified diamond will cost R 8990. Full information about the precious metal content, diamond content, diamond quality as well as recommendations for best value in certain budget will be given in the quotation. Due to the ever changing prices of metals, diamonds and dollar to rand rate these prices will be reviewed at the time of the order.

Engagement ring - classic solitaire
In the classic solitaire diamond engagement ring the impact is entirely on the stone and the setting have to be delicate and less prominent. In most cases 4 or 6 claw basket setting is used for the stone, although some different engagement ring settings featuring in updated classic versions look quite attractive. In all cases the diamond does not have metal frame and the girdle (the edge at the widest part of the stone) is partly exposed. I will not recommend classic solitaire for diamonds smaller than 0.45 ct. as they tend to look insignificant in this particular setting. Diamonds of about 0.45 ct can look very good if boosted with side stones (see 3 stone diamond engagement ring). Diamonds of 0.40ct and smaller is good to be set in appropriate bezel solitaire diamond setting which can optically increase their size.

Engagement ring - side stones
Engagement ring with side stones is one of the most popular styles of engagement ring. The base is a classic solitaire engagement ring with small diamonds extending over the visible front part of the shank and in some cases all around. The last variety, although very glamorous in appearance is impractical for women with active lifestyle and adds significantly to the cost. The engagement ring with side stones participates in its many forms in most of the other categories, so it is good idea to take your time and look through the Designer engagement ring, Engagement ring antique style and Halo engagement ring for better choice

Engagement ring - three stone
The three stone diamond engagement rings are second in popularity to the solitaire one. They can be described as classic solitaire engagement ring with a pair of smaller diamonds on each side, called shoulder or side stones. Various types of shapes can be used for shoulder side stones. By order of popularity the shape of the shoulder stones is: round, tapered baguettes, strait baguettes, trillion, princess, pear and heart. Often the three stone diamond rings have more than three stones. The necessary calcification factor is the one center diamond and two side ones as main design feature. At first glance it may look that three stone engagement ring should be more expensive than the classic solitaire but this is not always the case.

Engagement ring - antique style
The designs in this section are antique style diamond rings rather than real antique pieces and to differentiate them from real antique rings, I also call them Updated antiques. The antique components in most of the updated antique rings come from one or more of the following three style periods: Victorian (1837 to 1901), Edwardian (1901 to 1918) an Art Deco (1920 to 1930). This three styles overlap with other prominent style movements from these eras. Antique style diamond engagement rings are defined by plenty of small detail covering the shank on the sides and sometimes all the way to the back of the ring. It is practical however to leave the back of the ring plain and smooth.

Engagement ring - designer
The usual perception for engagement ring is a classic solitaire diamond ring. Designer engagement ring could be any of the classic engagement rings interpreted by a designer. This is really vast field to explore in such limited space. One thing to remember is that original design pieces does not usually fit in the budget category but "designer inspired" pieces are available and relatively affordable. In this section you will find pictures of engagement rings with designer background as well as engagement ring designs that deviate far enough from the classic solitaire diamond and three diamond ring. A designer diamond engagement ring is a statement of refined taste and out of the box thinking.

Engagement ring - tension set
Some 30 years after the introduction of the first tension set ring by Niessing the number of designs based on its concept is overwhelming. The tension set engagement ring design proved that even in jewellery, one good idea can branch out into years of ongoing trend. The original and still very popular tension ring design is a simple, excessively thick open band, holding a gemstone, most often diamond suspended between its two ends. The secure hold is provided by the tension of the work hardened metal springing back - the stronger the tension the safer the setting. Many variations of this design hit the market since then, from simple copies of the original to ones which completely eradicated the use of the tension concept.

Engagement ring - modern solitaire
In this section are diamond engagement ring designs, specific for the past two decades and still trendy at present. Practicality is an important feature in the modern diamond ring design aligning new aesthetics with the active lifestyle of modern professional women. The mountings are minimalistic and smooth and the diamond is often set in none traditional way. Good quality modern diamond engagement rings are solid and made from high precious metal alloy in order to secure very long trouble free wearing.

Engagement ring - halo
The concept behind halo diamond ring is not new. The halo design is based on the classic cluster ring with the difference that the main stone is emphasized and the framing (halo)diamonds are much smaller in size. The use of shared prong setting is another element separating the new from the old design as well as extending the diamond pattern well over the shank. Halo rings are the latest trend in diamond engagement rings
